Waipahu/Waipio/Waikele

A former plantation town, you can see the legacy of Waipahu, Waipio, and Waikele’s roots at Hawaii’s Plantation Village. It’s an outdoor living history museum and cultural garden where you can step back in time to learn about Oahu’s agricultural heyday. That is just one of the many reasons these neighborhoods are a great place to live. Just west of Pearl City, Waipahu wraps along the West and Middle Loch of Pearl Harbor and extends inland to Waikele and Waipio.

Today it is where you can find more affordable single-family homes, townhomes, and condos. These neighborhoods have a friendly, small-town feel with a 20-minute drive to Downtown Honolulu in one direction and central Oahu in another direction.

You’ll find barber shops, a music school, florists, community centers—all the hallmarks of a cozy hometown. In its original center, there is great local comfort food at longtime favorites serving hamburger steak, garlic fried rice, and manapua in out-of-the-box flavors such as pizza, pork adobo, and spicy crab.

And like all good small towns, it has lots of recreational experiences. Its bustling softball/baseball hub at Hans L’Orange Neighborhood Park was created in 1924 when the Oahu Sugar Co. manager of that name turned a sugar cane field into a playing field. Little leaguers and college teams alike play baseball on this diamond. Waipahu District Park is a well-equipped center with a gym, swimming pool, basketball courts, and much more. Teams from across the island play at the vast Waipio Soccer Complex and massive Central Oahu Regional Park, which also has a pool and tennis courts.  Several beautiful golf courses are available to those looking to combine socializing with friends with exercise.

While central Waipahu is where you’ll find single-family homes and low-rise condos, the neighborhood is also where subdivisions on former agricultural land have sprouted since 1979, when Gentry Homes started building the community known as Waipio Gentry. Now Waipahu includes the Village Park, Royal Kunia and Waikele subdivisions—places where many people looking for more space have found their place in the suburban sun.

The area includes Waikele Premium Outlets, whose top international brands draw residents from across the island. The shopping center across the street from the Waikele Center offers everything from Lowe’s to great dining options. In addition, Waipio boasts a convenient Costco warehouse.

If you’re interested in having everything you need in a small-town atmosphere where it is easy to get around while still being near a big city, Waipahu, Waipio, and Waikele check all the boxes.
