Palolo

Of all of Honolulu’s residential valleys, Palolo has one of the best locations on Oahu. It has a local, small-town charm but still a short drive to everything that urban Honolulu has to offer—the bustle of the downtown business district, the youthful energy of the University of Hawaii-Manoa, the shopping of Ala Moana Center, the entertainment offered by Waikiki, and the hip new revitalized Kakaako district.  Palolo is just steps from the boutique shopping and cafes offered by Kaimuki business district and a few minutes by car to the beaches of the South Shore of Oahu.

About 13,500 people live in the Palolo community. Homes range from beautiful plantation-style bungalows to newer and grander custom residences. Historically, Palolo was rich with taro fields, and at the very back of the valley, it is still an agricultural enclave where you can find small farms and a well-known orchid nursery.  It is also where you’ll find the start of the famed Kaau Crater Hike, which takes you through lush forests and three waterfalls.  Palolo has become popular amongst home shoppers as the residences tend to be affordable by Hawaii standards.

On Tenth Avenue, you’ll find a cluster of small shops and cafes where you can enjoy a cup of coffee, a hearty plate lunch or pick up fresh fish for dinner. And just blocks away on Waialae Avenue (in Kaimuki’s business district) are some of the city’s best restaurants, whether you’re craving some Neapolitan pizza or fine French cuisine.

In the middle of the valley is an elementary and middle school and Palolo Valley District Park that is fully equipped with a playing field, basketball courts, playground and 50-meter swimming pool. For those who love fresh locally grown vegetables and fruits, a farmer’s market is held at Palolo District Park on Wednesday mornings.

Everything you need is a short drive away in nearby Kahala, Kapahulu, and Kaimuki town. From supermarkets to hardware stores, you can find it all nearby. Kaimuki also is conveniently home to many essential services such as beauty salons, barbers, landscapers, and mechanics.

In the evening, barbecue in your backyard or have dinner at a nearby restaurant, then stroll through the neighborhood in the cool night air. You can see why Palolo residents can’t imagine living anywhere else.
