Mililani

In 1961, Mililani became Hawai‘i's first planned community. Located in central ‘ahu, the developers’ vision was to build a well-designed community with none of the gangly urban sprawl that had marred other areas. As a result, the Mililani community became one of the first true suburban areas in Oahu.

Spacious homes line its well-kept streets in a large range of styles and price ranges in single-family homes, townhomes and condos. And residents enjoy access to amenities and entertainment right in their own neighborhood, barring the unnecessary hassle of journeying beyond the Mililani area. Multiple shopping centers provide one-stop shops for anything a local family might need, including boutique shops, a bevy of dining options, and a movie theater. And with the construction of the H-2 freeway in 1976, access to parts of greater Honolulu became more convenient. Just a little over 16 miles from downtown Honolulu, the commute is breezier than most.

For those wanting to still take advantage of Oahu’s natural beauties, Mililani’s central location affords convenient access to areas like the famous North Shore. Just over 9 miles away from the North Shore’s world-renowned beaches, residents of Mililani can experience unparalleled surf and beachside leisure just a quick trip away.

The H-2 also divides the Mililani neighborhood into two communities, each with its own feel. Mililani Town to the west side of the freeway is the first phase of the development, and is the more developed part of the neighborhood, and as a result most of the shopping options and can be found here. Its spacious avenues are characteristic of the well-designed streets of other planned communities, and multiple large, public parks provide relaxing areas for families and individuals to exercise and gather. Mililani Mauka on the east side of the H-2 is a newer development, with the build starting in the 1990s. Though it may not be as developed as Mililani Town, the residents of Mililani Mauka see this as working in their favor. The houses are tucked closer to Mililani’s lush mountainside, creating a cozier atmosphere.

No matter which part of Mililani you may choose, you can be sure to find the same local spirit. This neighborhood feels worlds away from Oahu’s tourist-centers, which are often crowded with visitors year-round. In contrary, Mililani is a respite from the island’s busier neighborhoods and lifestyles.
