Makiki/Lower Punchbowl/Tantalus

The real draw to this community is its super convenient location with extremely short commutes to Downtown Honolulu, University of Hawaii, Ala Moana Beach Park, and shopping and dining in nearby hip neighborhoods such as Ala Moana and Kakaako. If accessibility is your goal, Makiki/Lower Punchbowl/Tantalus is your dream destination.

Makiki and Lower Punchbowl is a mix of low to high-rise condominiums and single-family homes. Just North is Tantalus, where you can find secluded, exclusive estates with stunning panoramic ocean and mountain views. The neighborhood retains a small-town feel while being minutes away from daily necessities.

If you are looking for a cup of coffee and a bagel, basic groceries, or a bottle of wine, just drop by the neighborhood shopping center, Makiki Shopping Village. Venture just a bit further out, and you will find world-class shopping at Ala Moana Center, enjoy a swim at Ala Moana Beach Park, or meet up with a friend for dinner and a movie in Kakaako.

This neighborhood is easily accessible to several of Hawaii’s top-rated private and public schools. It is a common sight to see students walking to school while you’re on your morning drive to work.

At the back of Makiki Valley is the Makiki Valley State Recreation Area, the starting point of multiple trails. At the nearby Makiki Pumping Station, a small park attracts the neighborhood dog owners. Makiki Street splits in two directions - each is a scenic drive up to the summit of Mount Tantalus, which is part of the Koolau Range. Along each scenic drive, you can stop at various viewing points and take in the hypnotizing views of Oahu’s coastline and the Honolulu skyline. As you ascend, single-family homes give way to forested areas until you can’t believe you are minutes from a bustling metropolis of Downtown Honolulu. Tucked out of sight of the street are stunning estates, including two architectural masterpieces by Hawaii’s most renowned mid-century modern architect Vladimir Ossipoff—the Pauling House (built by the son of the famed scientist Linus Pauling) and the Liljestrand House, now open for public tours.

Halfway up is the Puu Ualakaa State Wayside Park, where you can get out of your car and gasp at the view of the city. Nearby are a dazzling array of trailheads that take you through stands of strawberry guava, bamboo groves, and ohia trees (the Hawaiian name of Tantalus is Puu Ohia).

If you enjoy the outdoors as much as city life, Makiki is the perfect place for you.
